08 Sep Verizon Launches Free Mobile Only Streaming TV App
First, it was the HBO Go announcement that you could subscribe to the HBO streaming app without paying for a cable package, which (for Game of Thrones fans like myself) was a pretty big deal. Combine that with the ability to watch Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime whenever you like and suddenly there was very little reason to order anything more than high-speed internet from your cable company.
With the recent announcement that Verizon is getting in on the streaming TV act, there is very little chance that cord-cutters will ever go back to paying for traditional cable packages. Verizon is launching a new free mobile only app called Go90 (as in tilt your smartphone 90 degrees for TV watching) that will stocked with tons of TV episodes and video clips. The new app is aimed at millennials, who do most of their TV watching online already and is a move to push more wireless customers to use more data of their phones.
Users of the service will be able to discover shows by following others with similar tastes, and be able to capture clips of shows and share them socially. The success of the app will depend heavily on the shows and content that are available on it. Currently, Verizon has content deals with Dreamworks’ AwesomenessTV, Machinima and Vice, as well as the NFL, ESPN, Comedy Central and the Food Network, so there should be some good initial content when the app hits in a few days.
This isn’t the first time Verizon has launched a mobile video service (V Cast, anyone), but their team is hoping this time around is more successful. A Verizon exec described the Go90 experience to the NYT as “Hulu meets Twitter meets Netflix.” That is a pretty big claim to make, but one that’s also pretty intriguing.
I’ll be downloading the app as soon as it is available to see if holds up to the hype. You can sign up for a notification too, so you can get the app when it goes live.
