The world’s top female athletes are good at playing games but they are stellar champions at running the entrepreneurial empires they have created on the sidelines. Forbes just released its 2015 list of the World’s Highest Paid Athletes and both females to make to cut share much in common. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams are stellar tennis players and took home millions in prize money in 2015 (Sharapova $6.7 million and Williams $11.6 million), but they also both made more in endorsement deals than they did in prize money this year.
Sharapova took home $23 million through endorsement and
royalty deals with Canon, Nike, Cole Haan and Head (tennis racquet company). She not only acts as a brand ambassador for these companies, but also designs fashion and shoe collections for them as well. Williams cleared $13 million through her endorsement and royalty deals with Nike, Pepsi, Beats by Dre and Chase Bank this year. She also has collaborated on designs with these companies in addition to having her own independent fashion line.
I may forever be team Williams, but recognize that both these ladies are great examples to entrepreneurs and professionals everywhere on why side hustles are so important. Regardless of how great and well-paid your day job is, you should be looking for ways to leverage your skillset and expertise in other areas as well. Multiple revenue streams is a must in today’s fluid business environment.
You may not have billion dollar corporations banging down your door, but there are always creative ways to capitalize on your skills. Are you a business owner in a particular field? Try offering how-to workshops to entrepreneurs on the side. Are you an amazing photographer? Try giving 101 classes to fashion bloggers in your off season. Are you public relations professional? Try creating a PR kit template for small businesses that can be downloaded from your website.
Take a page out of Sharapova and Williams’ book and use what you’re already good at to create more income opportunities for yourself. With the right amount of focus and creativity, you might start seeing yourself on some highest paid list in your field in a few years.
