23 Jul Why Mentors Are Important for Every Professional
Sure, you could embark on a career without a mentor, but there are so many benefits to the advisor-advisee relationship, that you’ll be at a distinct disadvantage without it. Find someone who is trustworthy, experienced and generous, and watch your professional life take off like a rocket!
Real World Education
Even if you have an advanced degree, nothing can take the place of a mentor’s guidance. It’s like free year of business school, except you get to learn how the business world really works. That’s right office politics (warts and all). Not only that, your mentor can help guide you through difficult career choices and personal life changes. After all, they’ve already been where your at.
Networking
Just spending time with your mentor will expose you to contacts that can add to your network of vendors, investors, clients and even future employers. Whether you are eating lunch, attending a conference, or volunteering together, your mentor’s network becomes your network, and everyone wins.
Learn From His or Her Mistakes
A great mentor is one that has experienced success but also failure. If they are willing to share their highs and lows, be smart enough to listen. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t save yourself time and disappointment by learning from all they have to teach. Your mentor will have the knowledge and experience to advise you on major decisions and to mitigate the damage caused by any blunders you make.
My mentor has advised me in good times and bad and I am a better professional because of their support.
Is there someone you know that would be a good mentor?
