Snapchat Launches Spectacles – Sunglasses with Built-in Camera, Rebrands as Snap Inc.

It looks likes the California app company famous for its disappearing photos is moving into more tangible territory. Snapchat recently announced the launch of Spectacles, smart sunglasses that allow wearers to take photos or record 10-second of video by tapping on the glasses. Shot by an 115-degree-angle lens – users can record up to 30 seconds continuously with additional taps.

The first-person point-of-view sunglasses will connect wirelessly to a smartphone and photos and videos can be saved to Snapchat Memories.

Specs cost $130 and are available in three colors – black, teal and coral. Unlike the now-defunct $1,500 Google Glass, Snapchat’s popularity and pricing strategy may make Spectacles a hit with its user base.

Of course, there is the little question of privacy – which also plagued Google Glass. Sunglasses with built-in cameras allow users to record people subtly and opens the door to a whole host of possible surveillance-rights violations.

The company also announced it has rebranded as Snap, Inc so it may be preparing to take on these challenges head- on as it expands its business from the app space into hardware and accessories.
